Moderation Essays - Dorothea Dix, United States Sanitary Commission
In the 1800s, there were very few tax supported schools. These schools were meant to educate the poor and people didnt feel like their hard earned money should not go to someone else. Eventually, conservative Americans gradually saw the fact that if they didn't pay to educate other peoples kids, those kids might grow up and bind together, with the vote as their weapon of choice. Taxation for education was an insurance premium that the wealthy paid for stability and democracy. After this realization, public education grew in the north, but like in all other situations, the south lagged behind. As manhood suffrage increased during Jacksons presidency, a free vote cried aloud for free education. Even according to the 3rd president himself, A civilized nation that was both ignorant and free never was and never will be. As public education increased, the famed little red schoolhouse became a staple of US democracy. But it wasnt. It was anything but perfect. This was especially shown by th e grade of teachers. The teachers were ill-trained, ill-tempered, ill-paid. They were as good at teaching as riff raff is at rapping. Then along came Horace Mann. A Brown graduate and the secretary of the Massachusetts Department of Education, he effectively campaigned for more and better schools, longer school terms, higher teacher pay, and expanded curriculum and he got his requests. The education system was so much of a problem, Abe Lincoln even said on his own childhood education, there was absolutely nothing to excite ambition for education. Still after all of this, by 1860 there were only about 100 secondary schools and still roughly 1 million illiterate adults. Blacks were still legally forbidden to receive instruction in reading or writing, even free ones. Floyd Mayweather would fit right in. To help combat this lack of education, Noah Webster, a Yale graduate deemed the schoolmaster of the republic, wrote reading lessons designed to promote patriotism and used by millions i n the 19th century. He also wrote the webster's dictionary and spent more than a quarter of his life doing so. There was also William H. McGuffey. A native Ohioan, McGuffeys readers taught of morality, patriotism, and idealism and sold more than 122 million copies in the decades after 1830. That is more books sold than Tom Bradys net worth. Even though transcendentalism was at a high, people did want higher education thanks to the earlier 2nd great awakening. This 2nd coming led to many small liberal arts colleges in the south and west. The 1st state supported public universities were in the south. UNC in 1795 and UVA in 1819 which was the brainchild of TJeff. These colleges strived for freedom from religious and political shackles. Even with all of these advances, womens higher education was frowned upon. Their place was believed to be at home and training in sewing rather than algebra. It was a common conception that too much learning injured the feminine brain, undermined health, rendered a lady unfit for marriage. Emma Willard tried to change this stereotype by establishing Troy Female Seminary in 1821. This was followed by Oberlin College opening doors to women in 1837 and the creation of Mount Holyoke Seminary. As people craved more knowledge, tax supported libraries became increasing popular. Along with this came lyceum lectures were also prominent where educated talkers like my (6 greats cousin) Ralph Waldo Emerson spoke about science and philosophy nationwide. Magazines also flourished like the North American Review and Godeys Ladys Book during this time. The 2nd great awakening brought optimistic promises which inspired many to do battle against the earthly evils. Reformers dreamed anew the old Puritan vision of a society free from war, alcohol, and discrimination especially free from slavery. Women were strong advocators especially in their own struggle for suffrage. There was a desire to reaffirm traditional values. ----Unfortunately, Debtors Priso n was still a problem as late as 1830. Hundreds of penniless people were homeless sometimes for owing less than a dollar, but as embattled laborers won the ballot, state legislatures gradually abolished it. As with this, criminal codes in states were being softened. There was a reduction in capital offenses. Brutal punishments like whipping and branding were being

Questions on Financial Management Essays
Questions on Financial Management Essays Questions on Financial Management Essay Questions on Financial Management Essay Essay Topic: Questions Sensitivity analysis provide information for decision makers to more informed about project sensitivities, to know the room they have for judgemental error and to decide whether they are prepared to accept the risks. During the implementation phase of the investment process the original sensitivity analysis can be used to highlight those factors which have the greatest impact on NPV. Decision makers can draw on key parameters differ significantly from the estimates. For example, this project is highly sensitive to the price of product. $50 of change can make a great impact on NPV. Managers after recognising this from the sensitivity analysis should make some plans to avoid big change of price. From sensitivity analysis of Pentre plc, we can see market size in year 2 to year 5 is more sensitive than market size in year 1. Thus the company should take more efforts to keep and extend its market share from second year. Sensitivity analysis also has many drawbacks. For example, the absence of any formal assignment of probabilities to the variations of the parameters is a potential limitation. Change of government policy, eventuality impact such as SARS. Another criticism is that each variable is changed in isolation while all other factors remain constant. For example, if inflation is higher then both anticipated selling prices and input prices are likely to be raised. b) Merits and Drawbacks of the Use of Internal Rate of Return The Internal Rate of Return (IRR) is the discount rate at which the Net Present Value (NPV) of a project equals zero. The IRR decision rule specifies that all independent projects with an IRR greater than the cost of capital should be accepted. When choosing among mutually exclusive projects, the project with the highest IRR should be selected). IRR method has many advantages that make it one of the most widely used methods for evaluating capital investments. First, the IRR makes an appropriate adjustment for the time value of money. The value of a dollar received in the first year is greater than the value of a dollar received in the second year, and even cash flows that arrive several years in the future receive some weight in the analysis. Second, the hurdle rate itself can be base on market returns obtainable on similar investments. This takes away some of the subjectivity of other analytical methods that must be made when using payback or accounting rate of return, and it allows managers to make explicit, quantitative adjustments for differences in risk across projects. Third, because the answer that comes out of an IRR is a rate of return, it is easy for both financial and nonfinancial managers to grasp intuitively. Fourth, the IRR technique focuses on cash flow rather than on accounting measures of income. Though it represents a substantial improvement over payback or accounting return analysis, the IRR technique has its own set of problems that should analysis. One common problem is the difficulty associated with its calculation. In most circumstances the IRR of a project can only be found by trial-and-error. This is because the number of periods (or cash flows) involved in the project needs to be solved to calculate the IRR. IRR is the discount rate at which the NPV of a projects cash flows in equal to zero. Since zero is a number that lies between a positive number and a negative number, IRR must lie between two discount rates. So we need to guess a starting point to perform the interpolation. The second problem is that the nature of the rule must be modified depending on whether the project under evaluation is an investing project or a financing project (e.g. borrowing money from a bank). In the case of an investment, a corporation will accept a project with a high rate of return. With a financing project, the corporation is looking for the cheapest source of finance. Hence, the decision rule for a project must be modified to take into account whether it is an investment project or a financing project. Another problem with the IRR technique arises from the fact that a rate of return does not take into consideration the size of a project. This is sometimes referred to as the problem of scale. Incorrect investment decisions could be made when applying the IRR rule, because it ignores projects sizes. Assumptions There are no taxes. The absence of corporate income taxes is assumed. There are no costs of financial distress. For example, there are no transactions costs, and all securities are infinitely divisible. There are no asymmetries of information. It implies that the expected values of the probability distributions of expected operating earnings for all future periods are the same as present operating earnings. The investment and operating policies of the firm are given and investors are assumed to be rational and to behave accordingly. b) Price earnings ratio A price-earning ratio is a commonly used way to simplistically value a company, determine what a companys stock should be worth. It is also known as P/E, is calculated by dividing the companys stock price by the companys earnings per share, or EPS. The P/E ratio gives an indication of how many times shareholders paying for a companys stock compares a companys earnings. P/E ratios can be used to compare against other companies, or against a companys own historical P/E ratio. Investors usually are willing to pay a higher P/E for companies they judge will be growing faster than the norm even though they do not pay those earnings out in dividends but retain them to fund future growth. If that growth is realized, the price of the companys stock usually grows faster than the overall stock price of the slower growth or higher dividend paying company. However, if estimated earnings are not realized or the stock market itself loses favor with the investor, such as higher interest rates attracting investment capital, the downside potential is greater as well. The risk is not just the ability of the company to create profits, but the investment risk in the higher price you paid relative to earnings. However, this is also a good growth stock for those who can buy and hold for further growth including bonus issues which the company had given every few years because healthy lifestyle products has a good outlook in the future. P/E ratio decreased rapidly from 2002, this is because the boom of computer and internet industry in 2001. Stepped to 2003, due to the down results for the financial year, P/E ratio dropped quickly from 39 to 13 but the earnings also increased almost 4 times last year. That means the investment is worth and the company is still earning profits. Earning per share(EPS) $0.5 $0.5 EBIT 0 EBIT*30% = EBIT 54 (EBIT-54)*30% 420 270 EBIT = 151.2 b) Discuss some of the factors that are likely to limit the amount of debt that a company is likely to want to employ in its financing. Company is financed by ordinary shares (equity) or debt. Generally, debt has a cheaper direct cost than equity. There are two distinct reasons for this: ; Debt has low risk results in a low required return. Thus, company can reduce the cost of financing. ; Interest can be paid before taxation, whereas dividends are not. However, borrowing isnt perfect. To determining how much debt to use, corporate should first consider taxes. The government allow corporations to deduct interest payments from income before taxation, this essentially subsidizes dollar paid in interest. But any borrowing at all will cause the cost of equity capital to rise, offsetting the cheap direct cost of debt. Financial distress may also keep firms from loading up on debt. Explicit financial distress costs include the payments made to lawyers, accountants, and so on. they reduce the cash flows that will eventually be paid to the bondholders and stockholders. Clearly, investors would prefer that firms stay out of financial distress so that these losses are not incurred. Corporations must also consider the indirect costs of bankruptcy. As the firm takes on more and more debt, the probability of bankruptcy increases. This cause the firm will not be able to meet interest payments in any given year and will be forced into default goes up as the amount of debt and corresponding interest increases. It includes the costs of low inventories, higher costs of inputs from suppliers who fear the company might not pay its bills next month, and the loss of customers who desire a long-term relationship with the firm. These costs prevent firms from maintaining exceptionally high levels of debt. A fourth factor limiting the use of debt is desire for control by current shareholders. MM theory in a 1976 article, noted differences between the firm that is 100 percent manager owned and one where the equity is owned partially by managers and partially by outsiders. The managers should run the firm to maximize its value. But managers may not implement their decisions because of the control of shareholders. On the other hand, debtors cannot control the firms management that is advantaged. Availability of assets for pledge also limits the use of debt. In order to ensure its security of loan, bank always acquires pledges from the company and this kind of pledges should be easy to be realized. If the company lack of assets that can be used as pledges, it must be difficult to raise money as debt. When a company starts to borrow, the advantages always go with the disadvantages. In order to minimize the cost of capital and maximize the earning, company should consider above-mentioned factors carefully to gain benefits from financial leverage. c) Dividend Payment Policies 1. residual dividend pay dividend only if more earnings available than are needed to support optimal capital budget NTUC Income Shares 1999 ; 2000 6% each year 2001 5% 2002 3.5% 2003 5% Its dividend policy is to reward shareholders for investment earnings on their capital, which is used to back our business. Every Child Matters Act and the No Child Left Behind Act Essay Example for Free
Every Child Matters Act and the No Child Left Behind Act Essay Robinson 3rd hour Flanders A barrier for ensuring that all children in our community receive a high quality education would be the Every Child Matters Act and the No Child Left Behind Act. Ed. Gov states, ââ¬Å"President Bush made a commitment to ensure that all children receive a high quality education so that no child is left behind. In just one year after the president first took office, the No Child Lefty behind Act (NCLB) passed overwhelmingly. No Child Left Behind has led to higher standards and greater accountability throughout the nationââ¬â¢s school systems. No Child Left Behind provides the schools with more funding, gives states and school districts more control and more flexibility to use resources where they are needed most, holds schools and school districts accountable for results, and may provide your child with free tutoring and extra help with school work. When it comes to improving education in our state I believe our priority is to improve teaching, make better finical investments in our education systems, and coming up with better way to get students more involved and excited to learn. I believe we need to look at how much weââ¬â¢ve already spent and what were using the money for and evaluate what we are receiving in return. Opening college doors to more high school students who donââ¬â¢t have the funds to pay for it themselves is also another way in improving education in our state, allowing more students to have the opportunity to receive a decent education. Offering more and specific work related classes that interest the student and offering high more challenging courses for the students as well. But its not just about what the state and community can do, but its also up to the parents. Parents and Guardians play a big part in helping improve our education systems. The role of parent and parental involvement in improving education in our state is being involved. Regardless of the family income or background students with involved parents are more likely to earn higher grades and test scores attend school regular basis. Students with involved parents tend to have better social skills, improved behavior, and graduate on time and attend college. Children who have parents who arenââ¬â¢t there to push and motivate them donââ¬â¢t make it quit far. Parental support is always needed and a big part of parental involvement. If your parent doesnââ¬â¢t care about your education or is involved regarding you education youââ¬â¢re going to feel as if itââ¬â¢s not so important. Parents can become more involved by talking to their child and the childââ¬â¢s teachers, making sure they know who is giving their child the education and to be sure the child is working to their best of their ability. Physical environment affect school climate and student achievement by depending on what goes on inside or outside of school of the school will the feelings expressed by students, teachers, staff and parents about school. If the child is placed into a negative environment outside of school thereââ¬â¢s a big guarantee that it will be brought back into school by that child. Thereââ¬â¢s also a chance that other students may pick up vibes from another student rather its negative or positive. When the child is placed into a good positive environment outside of school more than likely he or she will feel more better about themselves and bring that attitude back into the school as well. A well disciplined environment, learning environment, social environment, and school-community relations all affect the schools climate and the achievements of the students who attend. When students have to travel outside their neighborhood to attend a great school their family looses time, money, and energy. To put your child in a school that is better than their neighborhood schools probably cost more and is a bit embarrassing to the community or area you reside in. Youââ¬â¢re using more gas to provide your child transportation to attend this school. It also takes up more time to take and pick your child up from a school thatââ¬â¢s more than 20 minutes away from where you live. Now with a lot of students coming from poorly educated schools to attend the good schools they are making the ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠public schools in that particular area look bad. Most Africa-American communities donââ¬â¢t care about attending school or getting a good education. Everyone wants to make it out on their own but it seems as if the younger generations donââ¬â¢t want to make the first step in receiving a good education. They donââ¬â¢t take getting a education as serious as they should. But not all African Americans in a community feel that way. I believe the African-American communities stand beside other communities in America with the problems in the system. I believe the African Americans stand beside other communities because most of them donââ¬â¢t care. From the looks of things I believe most African-Americans have the wrong mentality about school and life.

Autobiography :: Autobiography Personal Narrative
Part 1: Family Background I was raised by both my parents while growing up. My parents barely finished high school and never went to college so they were not the type of parents who pushed college careers nor did they have any sort of college fund set aside for us. They always helped with homework but never pushed us to do better. Now that they see my accomplishments from attending college they are very proud of me and supportive for me to finish. My mom even went back to college after seeing me and my sister do it, and she got an accounting degree at the age of 40. My parents came from poor families and not many college graduates. We often had no spending money or even good running vehicles but they always gave us love and we were happy with all of the small things we had. My parents used the permissive parenting style, at least for me and my sister; they never really used any type of punishments. They would tell us we were grounded from something but the next day we would be doing the things we wer e grounded from. We were always nurtured and my parents were easy to talk to. My dad taught us many things from riding a bike to driving a car; he never gave up on us and always gave words of wisdom. There were times when were yelled at and even spanked a few times, but the good times always overcame those bad. I have 3 sisters and 1 brother who are all younger than me. Being the oldest of 5 children had its good and bad occasions. Since I was the oldest I always was given first option on things like movies, where to eat and who got to play with what toys. I was also faced with a lot of responsibility being the oldest, I was expected to watch the other kids a lot to make sure they did not get hurt. Some days I felt more like a mother than a child but they looked up to me and listened to me so I felt good. To this day I still look after them and make sure they are doing the right things and doing well in school. I think that the "birth order" material is pretty close to des cribing all of us. Some days I felt more like a mother than a child but they looked up to me and listened to me so I felt good. To this day I still look after them and make sure they are doing the right things and doing well in school. I think that the "birth order" material is pretty close to des cribing all of us.

Wearable tracking system for analysis of footballer efficiency
ââ¬Å"My function in the application of systems technology in the group projectâ⬠The inclusive purpose of this Part A Group undertaking was to develop a racy, wearable trailing system for analysis of footballer efficiency during a lucifer. I was portion of Group B of Group 8 ; my groupââ¬â¢s assignment was to incorporate the accelerometer with the mbed development platform of the GPS-based system. The group consisted of four people including myself. In drumhead the complete purpose of this undertaking was to develop a wearable GPS-based trailing system that can temporal enter the football players efficiency during an increased continuance of a 5 minute football lucifer. The possible donee for this system is the primary stakeholders who were identified as the football manager or lookout as they benefit from the football players efficiency. They would be able to place if the football participant is worth their salary merely by analyzing their public presentations during lucifers. Accelerometer is an electromechanical device which measures acceleration due to motion and gravitation. The dynamic acceleration which is engendered by quivers from motions allows the capacitive accelerometer to specify in which way the user is traveling and what velocity. The inactive acceleration which is generated by the gravitative pull the measurings portrayed the angle of joust in relation to the Earthââ¬â¢s gravitative pull. A big sum of clip and attempt throughout this undertaking has been spent on team-working ââ¬â organizing the Group B squad, redacting the paperss achieved between us into a consistent manner and linguistic communication suited for non-technically minded readers. The intent of the group undertaking was to derive organizational, proficient, and systems technology accomplishments and cognition which I had expanded my apprehensions throughout this undertaking. This study is structured into separate subdivisions ââ¬â the first depicting the paperss created to help from a systems position. The 2nd focal points on the systems technology methods that have been applied ; why they were selected ; how they were tailored ; how good they worked and how these applications could be improved. The 2nd focal points on the functions I played within this undertaking with what I contributed besides. The overall end of the group undertaking was to develop a robust, wearable trailing system for analysis of football player effectivity during a lucifer. The purpose for my tutorial group ââ¬â Group B nevertheless, was to incorporate the accelerometer with the mbed development platform to enable extraction of the needed informations for tracking the systemââ¬â¢s acceleration forces over clip. In this undertaking, I took the enterprise to be the squad leader/manage whose duty was to pull off and put to death the sub-system developments. I made sure that my fellow squad members followed the Management Plans integrating the applications of the systems technology procedure used for this undertaking. As the tutorial group director I had the duty to set up the squad into a construction so that all members felt non merely that they had something to lend, but besides a say in the concluding sub-group study. That manner when it came to the testing of the overall system they wouldnââ¬â¢t feel that they had cheated their manner without lending to anything. One of the chief deliverables for this was in the signifier of a written study, which as a consequence of its size, and in an attempt I tried to include all group members, featured an input from each of them. To back up this undertaking I created a System Engineering Management Plan ( SEMP ) and a Project Management Plan ( PMP ) with a small aid from my squad members. The intent of these direction paperss to place and depict the overall systems technology procedures and methods to be used during the development of this Group undertaking. I was entirely responsible for the PMP due to the fact that I was the sub-group director so it was my responsibility to pull off the undertaking and put to death it with organizational and proficient abilities. To guarantee that there was communicating about the systems development throughout the undertaking I incorporated a communicating direction program. The communicating program involved a directory which had more than one contact information for each forces involved in our sub-group. I found it utile as I was able to update them utilizing the societal networking such as WhatsApp and Facebook to look into their electronic mails when needed. So following the communicating program was successful. I allocated two of my co-workers from the group to bring forth the Work Breakdown construction. The intent behind utilizing this was to be after our work more expeditiously. The undertaking was characterised by time-limited activated with assigned fixed clip frames. The WBS affected the undertaking because it helps do the development of the sub-system consistent supplying effectual undertaking executing. By treating the undertakings at manus more clearly I was able assign duties. The functions provided were given to each of the members based on their strengths and what they were willing to make every bit good. In order to follow the communicating program described in the Group study, I created a Facebook page for the Super Group to maintain up to day of the month with the other members of Group A and Group C of this undertaking. The page was rather successful as the pupils involved in our Super Group were now cognizant of the meetings up-coming with their anterior dockets. Members from each group were made admins so that they could add their fellow group members who I had missed out from their tutorial groups. With this page we were able to hold a successful football lucifer with the to the full incorporate system attached to one of the participants. As system technology procedure are characteristic within the overall system life rhythm. This attack is iterative to the system design and development. The lifecycles used was SEMP, CONOPs, System Requirements, Software coding and Hardware fiction, Unit proving, Subsystem and system confirmation, Validation ( Testing ) . However, to develop the accelerometer I customised this to accommodate my groupââ¬â¢s life rhythm procedure of the sub-systems development. This diagram was designed like this as I believed that this would be a suited manner in implementing the following activities. The first phase of the customised VEE diagram is the Requirements. As a group we recognised the user, system, functional and non-functional demands of the sub-system this helped with implementing the following phase of Management Plan paperss. This phase encountered the Project Management Plan ( PMP ) and the System Engineering Management Plan ( SEMP ) . The intent of such paperss provided a comprehensive baseline of what needed to be achieved within the undertaking, how they were achieved, who would be involved and how it will be communicated throughout the undertaking. Cardinal direction: intents ââ¬â hazard registry Once these were written to a satisfactory criterion, our coder executed the 3rd phase of our life-cycle. This contains the cryptography and testing of the sub-system. We could non go on to the following phase until the concluding execution of the accelerometer was verified by me. Until so, I took the chance to leap to the study composing phase and get down the initial bill of exchanges of the Group and Individual studies. After I verified our sub-system coding the integrating of the trailing system could be accomplished. The integrating merely took approximately two hours as it was rather easy one time all the sub-system cryptography were verified. This meant that in comparing to the Gantt chart which we achieved we were in front of agenda. This had an advantage as my sub-group were able to concentrate on the group study at manus utilizing up the clip allocated for the integrating of the system. When it came to the proving I didnââ¬â¢t take part in the lucifers its ego but I was the one entering the lucifers. I shared the images and picture with the other members in our super-groupo via facebook because I was the one videoing the testing. This means that the images seen in Group 8 sub-group group studies are most likely to be similar. In decision the biggest obstruction, for me in my sentiment, was successful completion of this undertaking was team-working by trying to finish our assignment in clip with the other sub-groups in this undertaking. I found it disputing to do certain that my co-workers kept to the deadline of the undertakings that were allocated to them. Although at the terminal of everything the system constructed performed really good, bring forthing informations required. It was compacted plenty to be worn without set uping the footballerââ¬â¢s public presentation but it could hold been improved if we was provided with a lodging device for the system. As the system was attached to my co-worker with a brand displacement lodging device wrapped around him with tape.
